Birds and Bread

This is something we were taught when we were young, go to the pond and feed the birds bread. Not such a good idea and here’s why. It does not contain enough nutritional value and calories to actually help the birds in any way. If the bread is not consumed it will stay in the water and rot causing surface algae which kills fish and gives the birds diseases. So if you are planning a trip to a lake or pond and want to feed the birds here is a list of healthy, safe choices: 1/2 cut seedless grapes, cooked rice, birdseed (any type but try safflower as it floats on the water), peas, corn, oats or chopped lettuce. And remember to keep a safe distance from the birds especially this time of year as they probably have a nest with eggs and are very aggressive and protective. Do not feed any wildlife by hand, simply throw out onto the surface of the water or sprinkle on the ground.
